AREA ROUNDUP: Bagley girls second in Pine-To-Prairie North

BAGLEY – The Bagley girls basketball team built an 18-7 lead over Fosston last week but the Greyhounds continued to nibble at their deficit and eventually downed the Flyers 54-44 in Pine to Prairie Conference action.

Jaysha Pemberton, who was named the Pine to Prairie girls basketball Player of the Week, scored 19 points to lead Bagley. She also had four rebounds and four steals.

Tuesday night the Flyers fared better as they blitzed Climax-Fisher 69-32. Pemberton scored 19 more points in that contest, going 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from 3-point land. The win upped Bagley’s overall mark to 9-7 and moved the Flyers into second place in the league’s North Division standings.

Win-E-Mac leads the division with a 10-0 conference record while Bagley is 7-4, Mahnomen 8-5, Fosston 5-6, Fertile-Beltrami 2-9 and Climax-Fisher 0-11.

Ada-Borup leads the South standings with a 10-0 division mark.

Clearbrook-Gonvick is second in the Northwoods Conference with a 7-1 league mark, trailing only Pine River-Backus which is 9-0.

Hot on Clearbrook-Gonvick’s heels is Kelliher-Northome which is 7-2 against conference foes.

Trailing the leaders are Nevis (5-4 in league play), Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (3-5), Blackduck (3-7), Cass Lake-Bena (1-7) and Laporte (0-9).

Clearbrook-Gonvick improved to 16-1 overall Tuesday with a 45-30 victory over Fosston. Last week the Bears blitzed Red Lake County Central 68-32 and Goodridge-Grygla 67-53.

On Friday they will host Pine River-Backus, hoping to avenge their only loss of the season. On Jan. 14 the Bears dropped a 53-37 decision at Pine River.

Kelliher-Northome split a pair of games last week, losing 50-45 to Nevis and bumping Laporte 69-23.

The Mustangs were shorthanded when they played Nevis as Shelene Head was sick and not at full strength.

“Although Shelene’s defense was there, she was unable to get her shots to fall and had only one basket,” said K-N coach Justin Lundin. “I am proud of how the team played defense in the first half (K-N led 22-17) but in the second half we went eight minutes before scoring and couldn’t hold onto the lead.”

Kelliher-Northome will travel to Lake of the Woods today and on Monday it will host Littlefork-BF.

Red Lake improved to 10-5 last week after spilling WHA 75-56 and Minnesota Transitions 87-50. On Wednesday the Warriors visited Cass Lake-Bena and Tuesday they will travel to Laporte.

CL-B took a 4-13 record into Wednesday’s contest. In recent action the Panthers went 1-2, losing 50-45 to Blackduck and 68-33 to BGMR before blitzing Lake of the Woods 60-25.

CL-B will head to Crosby-Ironton on Monday.

Laporte continued its struggles last week, losing to Blackduck 56-18 and to Kelliher-Northome. The Wildcats (1-13) play at Nevis Friday.

Blackduck split its last four games, downing Laporte and Cass Lake-Bena but losing to Lake of the Woods (54-41) and Littlefork (52-50). The Drakes entertain WHA today and visit BGMR on Friday.

Boys basketball

Blackduck shares second place in the Northland Conference boys standings as the Drakes are 6-3 in league action.

WHA holds the top spot at 6-1 while Blackduck and Nevis are 6-3.

Kelliher-Northome owns a 5-3 record and Red Lake also was 5-3 prior to Wednesday’s game at Cass Lake-Bena.

The Panthers took a 4-4 league mark into Wednesday’s game while Pine River (1-8) and Laporte (0-8) trail the pack.

In recent action Blackduck (10-6 overall) defeated Laporte 79-62 and CL-B 66-49 but lost 67-47 to WHA. The Drakes head to BGMR Friday.

K-N improved to 9-4 overall with three victories, tripping Nevis 85-68, belting Laporte 82-28 and stopping Littlefork 62-53. The Mustangs are off until Feb. 5 when they host WHA.

Red Lake took an 11-8 record into Wednesday’s game at CL-B.

The Warriors went 2-1 in recent action, losing 69-63 at RLCC but downing Minnesota Transitions 86-68 and edging Nevis 86-85.

On Friday they will visit Pine River.

Cass Lake-Bena (4-8) played only once in the past week, losing to Blackduck 66-49. The Panthers travel to Lakeview Christian Friday and host Crosby-Ironton Saturday.

Laporte is 3-10 overall and will visit Nevis Friday.

Clearbrook-Gonvick dipped to 2-12 last week when it lost 78-55 to RLCC. The Bears entertain Fosston today.

Bagley dropped three Pine to Prairie Conference North Division games last week and tumbled to 2-8 in the division standings.

The Flyers (4-13 overall) lost 78-57 to Fertile-Beltrami, 50-47 in overtime to Fosston and 72-49 to Climax-Fisher.

They will try to snap their six-game losing streak Friday at Win-E-Mac.
