This message is from Red Lake Nation Propane to provide a better understanding of Propane and its characteristics, including how to read a gauge and what it looks like inside of a tank fueled with propane.

We would also like to have the cooperation from commercial and residential customers to periodically check the gauge and call in around 20-30%, so that we can schedule a fuel delivery in a timely manner. It ties the company up when we’re trying to stick to a delivery schedule for those who call in at this percentage, when we have so many out of fuel calls, which is resulting in out of fuel charges to customers.

The gauge and tank below is similar to the tank/s outside your business or home. The gauge is located underneath the hood on top of the tank. The needle on the gauge will be clearly visible reading what percentage is in the tank.

The arrow pointing to the 80% mark on the gauge is where the tank is filled; this represents a full tank in 250’s, 500’s, 1000’s & 2000 gallon tanks including all other commercial storage tanks. Propane can only be filled to the 80% mark while the remaining percent left in the tank is measuring the vapor and pressure.

On this gauge the tank is reading about 74% that means there is 74% percent liquid propane in your tank and 36% vapor and pressure.

In the colder months propane liquid vaporizes causing more vapor and pressure in tanks than in the warmer months when the liquid stays in its solid form of liquid. Propane boils in colder temperatures making vapor, while vapor condenses back into liquid in warmer temperatures. Vaporized propane is what the propane systems in your building or home run off. Liquid propane is not present in lines running into the homes or businesses, only vapor exists.

80% = 200 gallons 40% = 100 gallons

75% = 187.5 gallons 35% = 87.5 gallons

70% = 175 gallons 30% = 75 gallons

65% = 162.5 gallons 25% = 62.5 gallons

60% = 150 gallons 20% = 50 gallons

55% = 137.5 gallons 15% = 37.5 gallons

50% = 125 gallons 10% = 25 gallons

45% = 112.5 gallons 5% = 12.5 gallons

500 gallon tanks

80% = 400 gallons 40% = 200 gallons

75% = 375 gallons 35% = 175 gallons

70% = 350 gallons 30% = 150 gallons

65% = 325 gallons 25% = 125 gallons

60% = 300 gallons 20% = 100 gallons

55% = 275 gallons 15% = 75 gallons
