Leonard Miigiizii Giizhigad Bluebird

Leonard Bluebird, 67, of Bemidji died Friday, October 26, 2012 at his home.

Traditional Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Red Lake Community Center in Red Lake, MN with Spiritual Leader Lee Staples officiating. A wake will begin at 6:00pm, Monday, October 29, 2012, at the Red Lake Community Center and will continue until the time of the service. Interment will be at the St. Mary’s Mission Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake, MN under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

He was born on January 21, 1945, in Kenora, Ontario, the son of George and Victoria (Abraham) Bluebird. After attending the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Leonard moved to Big Grassy, Ontario, where he served as Tribal Chief, living there for six years. He returned to the Duluth area and began his career as a Chemical Dependency Counselor in Cloquet, MN. He later worked as a Counselor in Brainerd at the Four Winds Treatment Center, up until his retirement in 2004. He lived in International Falls, MN, briefly before moving to Bemidji in 2004. He enjoyed telling ojibwe stories, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and his favorite show Walker Texas Ranger. He also enjoyed going to the Casino to play Keno. He touched a lot of people’s lives with his kind heart. He was always willing to help people out and listen when they needed it. He gave a lot of spiritual advice. He is survived by: Children, Karla Bluebird of Bemidji, Debbie Thompson of Nett Lake, MN, Kristina Defoe of Red Lake, MN, Patrick Defoe Jr. of Red Lake, MN Antonio Roy of Nett Lake, MN, Siblings, Duane Columbus of Bemidji, MN, Cecilia Bluebird of Superior, Wisc., Janet Bluebird of Fort Frances, Ontario, Roland Bluebird of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Khylie Weaver of Prescott Valley, AZ, Marlene Stickings of Toronto, Canada, Valerie Stickings of British Columbia, Special Friends, Kimberly Greene of Bemidji, MN, Sharon (Lawrence) Columbus of Bemidji, MN, Fawn Dewitt of Brainerd, MN, And 4 Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edwin Bluebird, Charlie Bluebird, sister Margaret Bluebird, nephew Christopher Bluebird, and niece Eileen Bluebird Maineville.

Active Casketbearers will be Elroy Lightfeather, Patrick Defoe Jr., Gordon Jones, Bryan Lussier Sr., Bryan Lussier Jr., and Pat Mainville. Honorary Casketbearers will be: Duane Columbus, Maurice Lawrence, Antonio Roy, Sharon Columbus, June Kendall, Carole Ostrander, and Debbie Thompson.
