Joplin Interim High School Wins CEFPI MacConnell Award

The Council for Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) crowned Joplin (Mo.) Interim High School as the 2012 James D. MacConnell Award winner at its annual conference in San Antonio. DLR Group and Corner Greer & Associates designed the award-winning campus, which opened August 2011. This is the second consecutive year a DLR Group design has earned top honors.

The MacConnell award is the most prestigious award for K-12 education design. It recognizes a comprehensive planning process that results in educational facilities that serve the community, enhances the educational program, and meets multiples goals. MacConnell-winning projects exemplify CEFPI’s belief that great schools begin with communication and planning.

In Joplin, the project team transformed an abandoned big box retail space into a 21st Century high school in just 55 business days. Watch how it happened here.

Jurors commented “the well planned engagement with the community on such a tight timeframe has given opportunities for rethinking learning spaces and stretching the vision of what learning environments can be.”

“DLR Group is the first firm to win the MacConnell award two years in a row. This is a special honor. It proves our designs are innovative and DLR Group is leading the way in 21st Century education design,” said DLR Group Senior Principal Jim French, AIA, REFP. “It illustrates the impact design can have on students, faculty and parents to elevate an entire community.”
