MAJOR DUTIES:

· Prepares sterile solutions in the pharmacy.

· Interprets the doctor’s orders; obtains necessary ingredients; measures and mixes additive for IVs; prepares labels and labels the final product; maintains records of the manufacturing process and supplies the product for delivery.

· Manufactures products requiring compounding which are made in large batches for more than one patient.

· Inspects the final product for accuracy and suitability; maintains records of the manufacturing process; labels the product; and supplies it for delivery.

· Enters the correct drug, strength, dosage form, and quantity into the patient’s computerized medical record.

· Performs final check of unit dose carts prepared by other pharmacy technicians.

· Explains pharmacy policies and prescription directions to patients as necessary.

GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses.

Specialized Experience: For GS-05 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent tothe GS-04) that included duties such as:

Reconstitute certain sterile medications which are to be added to intravenous solutions. Receive and fill ward and clinic drug supply orders for a wide variety of items stocked in the pharmacy. Make routine tours of areas serviced by the pharmacy, e.g., wards, clinics, special services, to ascertain replenishment needs from nurses. Bulk compounds, packages, and labels complex products, many of which are for internal consumption, e.g., cough syrups, laxatives. Determine which direction labels are appropriate for products compounded. Compound and bottle sterile solutions, such as irrigating and saline solutions. Set up those individual prescription orders for items that are frequently prescribed and are already repackaged and labeled.

GS-06: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level.

Specialized Experience: For GS-06 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-05) that included duties such as:

Performs substantially all sterile solution operations. Assures adherence to sterile procedures, care of equipment, use of correct labeling materials and techniques required during sterilization procedures, scheduling sterilization of bottles, and performance of standard assays on all completed solutions. Ascertains basic unit needs from appropriate hospital staff and refers any problems to pharmacist. Performs substantially all bulk compounding in the pharmacy. Bulk compounds, packages, and labels all products for which there are master formula cards, including the most complex products. Follow rigid sterile procedures which involve use of special equipment. Perform a variety of standard assays on completed products utilizing testing equipment. Coordinates supply and demand for products with users, and meets with company representatives about basic problems with equipment, labels, etc. Receives and reviews orders for intravenous additive solutions. Calculates, and converts to proper weights and measures, the amount of solution and drugs to be used. Reads individual prescriptions and determines kind, strength, and dosage of drug to be dispensed. Sets up prescriptions by obtaining correct stock container, counting or pouring correct amount of medication, and placing medication in smaller container.

Specialized Experience:

(for positions at GS-04 and above): Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of:

· Pharmaceutical nomenclature;

· Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals;

· Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the

· Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: Federal status applicants must have completed at least 52 weeks of service in a position no more than two grades lower than the position to be filled. If selected under the Excepted Service Examining Plan, individuals may be appointed without regard to time-in-grade requirements.
