Bagley, Blackduck remain hot

BAGLEY – Bagley’s football team extended its winning streak to three games Friday as the Flyers blitzed Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 41-0.

A blocked punt by Taylor McCollum set up Bagley’s first touchdown which came on a 19-yard screen pass from Zach Thoma to Aaron Leintz.

Logan Thorson found the end zone from eight yards out to give Bagley a 13-0 lead at intermission.

The Flyers dominated the second half, however, scoring 21 third-quarter points and seven more in the final stanza.

Thomas connected on 14 of his 21 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Thompson caught six passes for 105 yards and a score.

Leintz also had six catches for 61 yards and a TD.

Thorson’s 74 yards on 18 carries paced the running game. Jesse Dukek had 11 carries for 32 yards and two scores.

Thorson also intercepted a pair of passes, returning one for a TD. Dustin Vant Hul also had an interception.

Mason Clough and Chance Halverson each had nine tackles.

The Flyers end their regular season at home Wednesday against Blackduck.

The Drakes are on fire. After losing its first two games Blackduck has won four straight. The latest conquest was Friday’s 42-40 victory at Red Lake County Central.

“I had talked with the guys all week about how Red Lake County wanted to run the ball like we do,” said Drakes coach Jeff Volk. “I talked about it being a physical, knock ‘em down, drag it out slugfest type of game.

“Then it turned into a track meet.”

The teams traded punches and no lead was ever more than eight points.

“Our guys had a goal-line stand to end the first half to keep the score at 20-20,” Volk said.

Late in the game Blackduck scored and made a 2-point conversion to post a 42-34 advantage but RLCC went down field and scored in the final minute to draw within 42-40 with the PAT at hand.

“Our defense came up with a huge stop on the 2-point try to keep the score 42-40,” Volk said.

Trevor Smith ended RLCC’s hopes by recovering the onside kick and Blackduck was able to kill the clock.

“I can’t credit our offensive line enough for the job they did up front,” the coach said. “Our offense is really clicking and, although the defense gave up a lot of yards, they stood firm when they needed to.

“This was a big win for our team. Another confidence builder. The guys are playing well, improving each week and really coming into their own as a team.”

Trey Volk had touchdown runs of 5, 58, 68, 70 yards.Cooper Jedlicka also scored from one yard out.

A 74-yard pass from Jacob Krabbenhoft to Dylan Weisert also resulted in a Blackduck TD.

Trey Volk gained 299 yards on 24 carries. Brad Kusper had 12 solo tackles and assisted on 11 others. Krabbenhoft finished with 11 tackles, including three solo stops, while Shane Fenske had three solo and seven assisted tackles.
