Blackduck wins third straight

BLACKDUCK – A potent running game and tough defense carried Blackduck to its third straight football victory Friday as the Drakes spoiled Cass Lake-Bena’s Homecoming with a 52-0 win.

“The kids came to play,” said Blackduck coach Trey Volk. “Cass Lake opened on offense and on the first play from scrimmage Brad Kusper deflected a pass and Trey Volk intercepted. We took the ball down and scored.

“On their next possession Dominic Anderson intercepted a pass and ran it in for a touchdown,” Volk said.

It was that kind of a night.

The Drakes forced CL-B (0-5) punts on the next two Panther possessions and Blackduck’s’ offense found the end zone each time.

By the end of the first quarter Blackduck (3-2) was ahead 30-0 and the outcome was decided.

“The guys were assignment sound and played with a purpose,” Volk said. “I was very proud of them.”

Blackduck’s offensive line opened huge holes much of the night and the backs blasted their way through the gaps for 455 rushing yards.

“Defensively we also did a good job of holding their skill people in check,” Volk said. “Shane Fenske and Kusper were standouts on the defensive side of the ball.

“It was a team effort with everyone doing their jobs.”

Trey Volk gained 227 yards and scored four touchdowns on 13 runs. Dylan Weisert carried 12 times for 107 yards and Cooper Jedlicka and Trevor Smith each contributed a rushing TD.

Fenske finished with one solo and seven assisted tackles. Kusper had four solo stops and three assists. Volk and Anderson each had an interception.

In other area football results Bagley improved to 2-3 with a 62-0 romp over Lake of the Woods and Kelliher-Northome upped its mark to 4-1 with a 44-18 victory at Hill City.

In volleyball action Blackduck fell to 2-9 after losing 3-2 to Remer and 3-0 to Littlefork and Nevis. Cass Lake-Bena fell 3-0 at Nevis while Kelliher-Northome dropped straight-set decisions to Remer and Pine River.
