Guatemalan Maya Women Graduate as Rug Hooking Teachers

Wisconsin Artist and Rug Hooking Instructor Celebrates Her Students Graduation

Panajachel, Solola, Guatemala - On October 26th 2012, nine Maya women will graduate as teachers in the art of rug hooking. These women have been students of US hooked-rug artist and instructor Mary Ann Wise since 2009 and they will now become teachers of the craft with Maya women in their communities.

The rug hooking project has encouraged the women to produce innovative works of art which combine the art of rug hooking with design elements and colors inspired by motifs present in Guatemalan “traje” (traditional clothing), folklore, and culture.

This exclusive engagement will take place on October 26th at the Oxlajuj B’atz’ (Thirteen Threads) headquarters between 1pm – 3pm in the beautiful gardens of the historical Casa Cakchiquel, Calle 14 de febrero, Panajachel, Sololá, Guatemala. Along with a graduation ceremony, the Maya women artisans beautiful hooked rugs will be on display. All press welcome.
