Senior Advisor to Secretary Vilsack Announces Water System Improvements to Benefit Minnesota's Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development agency has issued the following news release:

Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Tribal Relations Janie Hipp announced today that USDA will fund a water quality project to bring water and sewer services to new homes being built on Minnesota's Red Lake Reservation.

"Without this project, a number of residents of Red Lake would not have access to safe drinking water and reliable sewer services," said Hipp. "This project builds on the commitment of the Obama Administration and Secretary Tom Vilsack to improve the quality of services being provided to Native Americans and Alaska Natives. It will greatly improve the quality of life for many members of the Tribe."

The Tribe will receive a $997,000 grant and a $901,000 40-year loan to extend water and sewer service to 45 new homes being constructed near Red Lake. Hipp noted that annual per-capita income in the area is less than $8,000 and the local unemployment rate is near 25 percent. The Reservation is located in Beltrami County, north of Bemidji.
