DNR finalizes rules for first wolf hunt

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has finalized rules for the state's first regulated wolf hunt later this year.

DNR wildlife program manager Steve Merchant says the hunting region will be divided into three zones. Two of the zones will closely parallel the treaty-ceded territories. The DNR says the zones will allow the state to manage the wolf harvest in consultation with American Indian bands that have off-reservation hunting rights. When the harvest targets are reached in any of the zones, it will be closed to hunting.

The DNR has split the hunt into an early wolf hunting-only season coinciding with the deer season beginning Nov. 3 and a late wolf hunting-and-trapping season beginning Nov. 24 and ending Jan. 31, 2013.

The target harvest for both seasons is 400 wolves
