Judge sets court date for man accused in cross burning

BEMIDJI – Derek Daniel Barnes, 20, of Bemidji, appeared Monday morning in Beltrami County District Court for a hearing before Judge Paul Benshoof.

Barnes appeared on four court files, including one for a charge of felony stalking/harassment for his alleged role in the Northern Township cross-burning that occurred earlier this month. The other files include a 2011 felony charge for third-degree burglary and two alleged probation violations.

Barnes’ attorney, Jason Pederson, asked Benshoof to allow for a continuance as the Beltrami County attorney’s office is expected to file an additional felony charge against Barnes.

Benshoof set Barnes’ next court appearance for July 9.

Barnes remains in Beltrami County Jail.
