American Indian Family Center of St. Paul Win's $50,000 Renovation Grant

ST. PAUL, MN - The American Indian Family Center (AIFC) of St. Paul was one of three $50,000 renovation winners in the Maxwell House "Drops of Good" Community Project. Other winners were the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte, NC and the Center for Urban Youth and Family Development in Detroit, Michigan. They’ll each receive $50,000, volunteers, supplies and a whole lot of good, according to the Maxwell House Website.

Culturally grounded and driven by fundamentals, like sharing, generosity, and respect, the AIFC’s programming supports more than 800 families a year. Community members can learn and grow from counseling, employment, family, and youth services. They take a holistic approach to making a lasting difference in people’s lives.

While they give everything they can to the community, their facility has fallen to the bottom of the list. With a few much-needed repairs and upgrades, the AIFC would be like new!

* Covered by a bad roof for years (now with a new one!), the building has fallen victim to water damage throughout. By replacing the ceiling tiles, sub-flooring, and carpet, it will be like the water was never there.

A humble entrance to the center welcomes all in the community.

* To become ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant, the AIFC has an immediate need to renovate the bathroom facility. This will be a major overhaul, but well worth it!

* Remodeling some of the commonly used rooms, like the kitchen and children’s area, would help the spaces become much more accessible.

* Due to the outdated HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system, visitors are starting to feel the extreme weather changes indoors. A more energy-efficient system will be a welcome improvement.
