Opportunity for teens

The Minnesota Indigenous Youth Freedom Project

Blandin Reservation Community Leadership Program Alumni,

We would like to pass on an opportunity for teens in your community that is being presented by The Minnesota Indigenous Youth Freedom Project (MIYFP). The MIYFP is a University of Minnesota Duluth based youth leadership program for Native youth aged 13-17 and you are invited to nominate participants for a truly remarkable and transformative summer experience.

This year, the program plans to have Native American youth from all 11 reservation communities in Minnesota engaged in training experiences. The program is free of charge with parents or community members providing transportation to and from the camps.

The program consists of a one-week youth leadership training camp at the University of Minnesota Duluth Campus, a fall weekend retreat, and year-long community-based project with a community mentor.

The goals of the camp are to:

• Increase leadership skills and abilities.

• Increase opportunities for youth to demonstrate and build their leadership skills within a community and organizational context.

• Increase collaboration with existing community-based and culturally relevant youth programs within tribal youth.

The 2012-2013 camp dates are:

• June 24th - 29th for young men.

• July 8th - 13th for young women.

• July 15th - 20th for young women.

• Aug 5th - 10th for young men.

For applications and more information about the program please contact Jamie Walt, MIYFP director, at 218-726-6596 or jwalt@d.umn.edu
