Lucas Bratvold Receives the Prestigious Udall Scholarship

The Udall Foundation announced Leech Lake Tribal College student Lucas Bratvold as one of 80 students selected - from a total of 585 candidates nominated by 274 colleges and universities - as a 2012 Udall Scholar.

The 2012 Udall Scholars will assemble Aug. 8-12, in Tucson, Ariz., to receive their awards and meet policymakers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal health care and governance. Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 for the scholar’s junior or senior year.

The Udall Foundation is an independent federal agency that was established by Congress in 1992 to provide federally- funded scholarships for college students who intend to pursue careers related to the environment, as well as to American Indian students who are pursuing tribal public policy or health care careers.

Prior to enrolling at LLTC, Bratvold, an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe, served six years in the U.S. Air Force. He is an honor student and one of only two U.S. tribal college students selected for this prestigious award.
