DLR Group 2012 CEFPI MacConnell Award Finalist

DLR Group is a finalist for the 2012 Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) James D. MacConnell Award for the design of the Joplin (Mo.) Interim High School. This is the second consecutive year a DLR Group project has been selected as a MacConnell finalist. The Marysville (Wash.) Getchell Campus received the MacConnell Award in 2011.

The MacConnell program is the most prestigious award for K-12 education design. It recognizes outstanding educational planning resulting in facililties that best serve the needs of students, staff, and the community.

After a tornado completely devastated the high school on May 22, 2011, Joplin Superintendent C.J. Huff stated that school would open as scheduled on August 17. An abandoned big box retail store was selected for adaptive reuse to house 1,200 students.

The interim high school is designed to serve as an incubator for the new high school and a rallying point for the community. The interim school hosts 21st Century learning features, including collaborative learning environments, customizable spaces, and vibrant Joplin Eagle logos to give students, faculty and staff a sense of ownership. Additionally, it allows teachers to change the way they deliver instruction. This "fast-track" project was designed and built in just 55 days.

DLR Group partnered with CGA Architects to design the interim school.
