2012 Project Grow News

Red Lake DNR/Project Grow has been awarded funding for gardens from the Red Lake Tribal Council! Every year, gardeners are anxious to plant their garden. Frost dates for Red Lake are: last spring frost- May 25th, and first fall frost -September 23rd. The best time to plant your garden is around Memorial Day. The soil needs to warm to the right temperature. Planting before the soil temperature is right will result in rotten seeds and/or poor harvest.

Seeds are purchased in bulk and are currently being packaged for distribution. Seeds will be available beginning Friday, May 11, 2012 at Red Lake Nation Foods (former water bottling plant) in Redby.

Potato seed will be available the week of May 14th. The supplier will notify us when the seed is cut and ready for pickup.

Plants will be available the week of May 21st. The supplier will notify us when the transplants are ready for pickup. Tomato and pepper transplants are purchased, because they require a longer growing season. If these

starter plants are set out to early, frost will turn them black and kill the plant.

Garden seeds, potato seed, transplants will be distributed at Red Lake Nation Foods (former water bottling plant) in Redby.
