Red Lake tribe to allow nonmembers to take walleyes from smaller lakes on reservation

RED LAKE, Minn. - The Red Lake Nation will allow nonmembers to take walleyes on smaller reservation lakes this summer for the first time in nearly 20 years.

The tribal waters of Lower and Upper Red Lakes are not included.

The Grand Forks Herald reports (http://bit.ly/I4TbGQ) the tribal council approved the move this month. It also applies to the Red Lake River below the dam on Red Lake.

Nonmembers must have a nonresident license and be accompanied by a tribal guide. A list of guides is available at tribal headquarters or the law enforcement complex.

The walleye limit for nonmembers is three daily, six in possession.

The tribal council barred nonmembers from taking walleyes from the reservation's smaller lakes in the 1990s around the time a moratorium was imposed on walleye fishing on Red Lake.
