CL-B baseball team drops first two games

Cass Lake-Bena dropped its first two baseball games of the spring and saw its Tuesday home game against Pine River-Backus postponed until May 4 when it will be the second half of a doubleheader at Pine River.

The Panthers will shoot for their first win today when they head to Deer River. The busy week also includes Thursday’s contest at Red Lake and Friday’s game at Laporte.

CL-B began the year with an 8-6 loss to Bagley and last week the Panthers spotted Walker-Hackensack-Akeley a 7-1 lead and eventually fell 7-4.

Cass Lake-Bena scored three runs and left the bases loaded in the seventh inning of that game.

WHA touched CL-B starting pitcher Caleb Fisher for three runs in the third, three more in the fourth and a solo run in the fifth.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the first inning when Fisher walked and eventually scored courtesy of Wes Moe’s single.

Cass Lake-Bena managed only one baserunner during the next four innings and couldn’t dent the scoreboard until the seventh.

Jordan Collins and Erik Jones began that late rally with walks and an out later Fisher and Ben Ruzek also walked. After Jake Ellis bounced into a fielder’s choice Moe and Nic Rairdon walked to force home the third run.

The inning eventually ended with a ground ball out.

Bagley was 2-1 heading into this week’s action. The Flyers opened the year with the win over Cass Lake-Bena and a 3-2 victory over Kelliher-Northome. Bagley then lost 8-6 to Fosston.

Bagley was scheduled to host Nevis Tuesday and will entertain WHA on Thursday and Blackduck on Friday.

K-N hoped to visit Lake of the Woods Tuesday and the Mustangs will travel to Nevis on Thursday before hosting Pine River-Backus on Friday.

Blackduck won its opener against Lake of the Woods 8-4 and was scheduled to entertain Red Lake Tuesday. On Thursday the Drakes will host Laporte in a doubleheader and the week will end Friday at Bagley.

Laporte hoped to begin its campaign Tuesday at WHA and Thursday it will head to Blackduck for a twinbill. The Wildcats will have their home opener Friday against CL-B.

Red Lake dropped its first game 10-0 to Nevis and this week the Warriors are scheduled to visit Blackduck on Tuesday and host CL-B on Thursday and Lake of the Woods on Friday.

Bagley is 3-2 in the early going and is coming off a 2-1 record at Saturday’s tournament in Park Rapids.

The Flyers outgunned Crookston 11-8, lost 10-3 to Park Rapids and belted Pine River 7-1 on way to their third-place finish.

Bagley was scheduled to visit Win-E-Mac on Tuesday and hosts RLCC on Thursday.

Cass Lake-Bena split its first two outings, losing 23-12 to WHA and thumping Laporte 21-0.

The Panthers visited Red Lake Tuesday and host Nevis Thursday.

Red Lake also is scheduled to welcome Laporte on Friday.

Blackduck claimed its opener 23-15 over Win-E-Mac and travels to Littlefork-BF on Thursday.

Kelliher-Northome entered the week 1-0 after drilling Lake of the Woods 24-5. On Thursday the Mustangs visit Remer in their only action of the week.
