Red Lake Opens Smaller Lakes to Non-Member Fishers

Seven Clans Casino Red Lake will be offering guided fishing trips this year starting May 12 and running through October 31, 2012. This does not include Lower or Upper Red Lake, but does include the reservation's smaller lakes, which offer the opportunity for anglers to catch everything from lake trout and rainbow trout to largemouth bass, pike, bluegills, slab crappies and walleyes.

The waters of the Red Lake Indian Reservation aren't typically thought of as a destination for Minnesota anglers. According to Darwin Sumner, outfitters manager at Seven Clans Casino, non-tribal anglers have been able to buy licenses to fish the small lakes within the reservation in the past, providing they fished with a Red Lake band member, but this is the first time package trips have been available.

“There’s a whole bunch of different lakes, and they’re all over the place,” said Al Pemberton, director of the Red Lake Department of Natural Resources. “They’re all pretty unique, and not a lot of people fish them. Our lakes are so unpresured. If people want to catch fish of any species, this is the place to come."

Sumner, who has guided on the small lakes in the past, said he typically begins by fishing trout in the morning and then moving to lakes with bass, pike or crappies as daytime temperatures rise.

“With the panfish, they’re pretty much temperature related, so when the water gets warmer, they’re more active,” Sumner said. “With walleyes, it’s just about any time with them. There’s a good population of walleyes, and they’re fairly easy to catch. I’ve caught them on everything from Mepps spinners to bass stuff.”

Pemberton said he released a 25-pound lake trout on one of the lakes last fall, and some of the lakes have largemouth bass weighing 6 to 8 pounds. As for crappies, anglers have a shot at slabs measuring 15 to 16 inches.

The Package

"We have 27 lakes that are located within 20 minutes of the casino in any direction," said Sumner, "which makes it possible for anglers to jump from lake to lake and target specific species at certain times. We call these lakes 'Hidden Waters' which are unique because of the wilderness setting and remoteness, which helps these lakes remain very fertile and full of 'Trophy Class Fish.'"

Fishermen and women of all ages can experience a trip of a lifetime that will allow them to for several different species including, Lake Trout, Brook and Rainbow Trout, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Perch, Crappie and Walleye all in one day.

"We have three boats that can accommodate up to three anglers per boat. All fishing equipment, tackle, bait, and bag lunch are provided," said Sumner, "anglers need to just show up and we take care of the rest. A shore lunch of “ Famous Red Lake Walleye “ can be offered upon request at an extra cost. Just show up, and we will take you fishing,” said Sumner.
