DEPUTY COMMISSIONER RETIRES

ST. PAUL – After 33 years of service to the Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC), David Crist will retire as deputy commissioner of the Facility Services Division on May 1.

“I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and to the people with whom I’ve been privileged to work,” Crist said. “Corrections is a noble, but underappreciated, part of the criminal justice system. I’m proud to have been a part of the Minnesota DOC.”

Crist began his career with the DOC in 1979 as a part-time corrections officer at the Minnesota Correctional Facility (MCF)-Shakopee. He went on to serve as a case manager, case management supervisor, assistant to the warden, program director, associate warden of administration and associate warden of operations. Between 1997 and 2007, Crist was warden of the MCF-Stillwater and Lino Lakes. In 2007, he served as assistant commissioner of the Facilities Services Division before being appointed to deputy commissioner of the Facility Services Division in May 2009.

During his time with the DOC, Crist served as auditor of corrections standards for the American Corrections Association, co-chair of the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center-Northeast Regional Advisory Council and as a member of the National Institute of Justice’s Corrections Technical Working Group and Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Advisory Committee. He has published two articles in the area of corrections technology.

“David carries a wealth of corrections knowledge and experience,” said Commissioner Tom Roy. “He has never forgotten his roots as a corrections officer. David is recognized in all facilities and is warmly greeted by both staff and offenders. He is a great example of someone who brings honor to public service.”
