Red Lake man appears in court on charge of assaulting woman with shovel

A Red Lake, Minn., man charged with assaulting a woman with a shovel on the Red Lake Indian Reservation made his initial appearance in federal court Monday in Duluth, U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones said in a news release.

Myron Lee Jones Jr., 25, was indicted March 20 on a charge of one count of assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The indictment alleges on Aug. 23, 2009, Jones assaulted the woman without just cause, striking her in the back of the head. The victim required about 20 stitches.

The case is the result of an investigation by the Red Lake Tribal Police Department and the FBI.
