Benjamin vs. Weyaus for Mille Lacs Band chief

The results from Tuesday's Mille Lacs Band primary will set up a contest between former Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin and former Secretary/Treasurer Herb Weyaus, who led the effort to have Benjamin removed from office in 2008.

Benjamin won the primary with 335 votes or 35.19 percent. Weyaus had 135 votes or 14.18 percent.

In third place was Carolyn Marie Shaw, who has been serving as Commissioner of Administration under current Chief Executive Marge Anderson. Shaw garnered 116 votes or 12.18 percent.

Anderson came in fourth with 81 votes or 8.51 percent.

The general election will be held June 12.

In the primary for District 1 Representative, incumbent Sandra Blake had 193 votes followed by former Rep. Alicia Lydia Skinaway. Also receiving votes were Ronald Eugene Smith (76), Carol Ann Sam (35) and Dale Ballinger Day (22).
