DWIs up in Minnesota on Super Bowl Sundays

MOORHEAD – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety said Super Bowl weekend can be deadly on the road.

With higher-than-average alcohol-related crashes, the DPS is urging motorists to designate a sober driver before Sunday’s coin toss.

The DPS said 1,201 people were arrested for driving while intoxicated on Super Bowl Sundays from 2006 to 2010.

During that time, nine fatal accidents occurred, and four of those crashes were alcohol related.

The numbers equal a 44 percent rate of alcohol-related fatal accidents, which is higher than the state average of 30 percent.
