Delbert Earl Lindseth

Delbert “Del” “Deb” Lindseth, 87, of Bemidji, died Monday, January 30, 2012 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center, after an eight year battle with cancer.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Friday, February 3, 2012 at the New Salem Lutheran Church in Turtle River, MN with Rev. Karol Hendricks-McCracken officiating. Visitation will be from 4 -7 pm Thursday with a prayer service at 6:30pm at the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Military Honors by the American Legion Post # 14 of Bemidji will follow the service. Interment will be at the Turtle Lake Township Cemetery north of Bemidji.

Delbert was born in Bemidji on July 1, 1924 to Harold and Marjorie Lindseth. He graduated from Bemidji High School in 1942. While in High School he was active in FFA and 4-H. After attending college, he joined the US Army. He saw combat in France and Germany during WWII. After WWII he joined the Minnesota Army National Guard, and was again called to active duty during the Korean War. During the Korean War he was a Unit Commander, training troops for combat in Fort Rucker, Alabama. He served as the Company Commander of the Bemidji Army National Guard Unit and retired in 1966 as a Captain. He spent a combination of 22 years in the U.S. Army and Minnesota Army National Guard. He married Pat Grover on January 7, 1950, in Bemidji. They lived in rural Bemidji where they raised their family on Lake Movil. Delbert worked as an Assistant Highway Engineer for the Beltrami County Highway Department. In 1961, he was employed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as Supervisory Highway Engineer. He held this position until his retirement in 1980. Delbert enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, farming, cutting fire wood, and working outside. He particularly enjoyed trout fishing on Crow Lake in Canada and spending time at the family deer hunting cabin in Northome. He had a special relationship with all his brothers and sisters and enjoyed weekly lunches with his three brothers. He served as a member of the Northern Elementary School Board. He was a member of the Bemidji American Legion where he served as a Finance Officer. He was a member of NARFE and served a term as president. He was a life-long, active member of New Salem Lutheran Church where he served several terms on the Church Board.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; children: Sue (Jon) Holter, Warren, MN; Gail (Tom) Honek, Staples, MN; Paul (Teri) Lindseth, Bemidji; Joy (Dave) Johnson, Bemidji; Glen (Terri) Lindseth, Bemidji and foster daughter, Nancy Swenson, Bemidji. Brothers and sisters: Margaret (Ray) Carlson, Jim Lindseth, Clarence (Ardella) Lindseth, Neal (Luella) Lindseth, Pauline (Larry) Golden, Darlene (Howie) Schultz, all of Bemidji; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Norma (Jim) Lindseth.

The family offers a special thanks to all the great staff at Sanford who cared for Delbert.
