DNR seizes 234 fish at Lake of the Woods

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeing a jump in fishing violations on Lake of the Woods this winter.

The DNR recently seized 234 walleyes and sauger for various violations on the northern Minnesota lake.

From Jan. 20-23, conservation officers reported 23 instances of anglers over their limits, 14 cases of anglers using extra lines, 12 anglers found with no fishing license, and five illegal length cases.

Officers observed anglers violating fish cleaning and consumption rules on the lake as well as ignoring size restrictions.

The DNR reminds anglers that they must keep the carcasses of the fish they fillet on the ice until they are consumed. Once they are consumed, carcasses may not be discarded on the ice or in the water.
