High School Basketball Update - Dec. 13, 2011

The Kelliher-Northome girls basketball team opened the year with three victories but over the weekend the Mustangs lost 65-53 at Nevis and 72-37 at home to Pine River.

On Dec. 6 K-N trimmed Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 67-60.

Kelley Heck scored 24 points in the win over WHA while Katey Lutz had 16 and Shelene Head 12.

Heck drained nine field goals in the victory and added four free throws.

In the loss to Nevis Heck had 17 points, Lutz 16 and Head 11.

Kelliher-Northome heads to Lake of the Woods Tuesday in its only action this week.

Cass Lake-Bena has started the winter on an 0-3 stretch with losses to Lake of the Woods, Nevis and Pine River.

Jordan Jackson scored 28 points, Mariah O’Brien 12 and Joy Smith nine in the loss to Nevis while Nicole Collins had 13 rebounds.

Against Pine River Jackson had 11 points, Kaylee Brunelle 10 and O’Brien nine. Adrianne Cloud and Kandis Davis-LaRose each had 10 rebounds.

The Panthers host WHA Tuesday and travel to Red Lake on Thursday.

Bagley enters the week with a 1-2 record after losses to WHA (68-61) and Win-E-Mac (72-52) and a victory over Ulen-Hitterdal (54-34).

Kari Skersick had 25 points and 10 boards in the loss to Win-E-Mac while Sean Benson contributed 16 points and five rebounds.

On Dec. 8 the Flyers opened a 27-21 halftime lead over Ulen-Hitterdahl and went on to an easy 54-34 victory.

Skersick had 27 points and 11 rebounds while Benson had 12 points.

Sam Olson came off the bench to score six points and Jasmin Nelson had a career high nine rebounds and also dished five assists.

“It was a great team effort and everyone found a way to contribute to the victory,” said Bagley coach Brandon Schwegel.

The Flyers are at Waubun Tuesday and visit Mahnomen Friday.

Red Lake has split its first four games, losing to Warroad 49-21 and WHA 88-51 but defeating Bug O Nay Ge Shig 58-21 and Four Directions Charter 71-24.

Mary Cobenais had 14 points in the win over Four Directions while Serena Graves scored 12, Tatianna McClain and Avery Holthusen nine and Grace White eight.

The Warriors visit Laporte Tuesday and host CL-B Thursday.

Laporte takes an 0-4 record into Tuesday’s home game against Red Lake. Last week the Wildcats lost 61-22 to Pine River.

Clearbrook-Gonvick is 2-2 after victories over BGMR (44-37) and Red Lake County Central (59-46).

Brittany Wagner had 18 points in the win over RLCC while Jessica Spry had 12 and Angela Burgess 11.

Boys Basketball

Bagley is picking up where it left off last year as the Flyers are 2-0 after a 78-28 victory over Park Rapids and a 62-52 win over Ulen-Hitterdal.

Tuesday sees Bagley visiting Waubun and Friday it heads to Mahnomen.

Blackduck is 3-1 entering this week and finished 1-1 at the Fosston tournament, losing 60-52 to Lake Park-Audubon but stopping Win-E-Mac 78-59.

The Drakes host Nevis Tuesday and visit Littlefork-BF Friday.

Cass Lake-Bena entertains WHA Tuesday and travels to Red Lake Thursday. The Panthers are 3-0 following last week’s 71-51 win over Nevis and 77-50 victory over Pine River.

Jake Ellis had his second double-double of the year with 18 points and 15 boards against Nevis. Jordan Collins had 18 points and nine rebounds while Caleb Fisher had 15 points. Fisher and Cody Wind each dished eight assists.

Against Pine River Collins finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds, Ellis had 20 points and 15 boards and Wind 10 points and 10 assists.

Fisher added 12 points.

Red Lake is 2-1 heading into Thursday’s showdown with CL-B. After defeating Sacred Heart 56-51 and Goodridge-Grygla 90-74 the Warriors fell 79-72 to Stephen-Argyle.

Kelliher-Northome split its first two games, dropping a 71-63 decision to Blackduck but thumping WHA 76-62. Joey Schuh had 18 points, Jeff Roosdett 14, Keith Shaughnessy 13, Tristan Williams 10 and Caleb Schneider 10 against WHA.

The Mustangs visit Lake of the Woods Tuesday and travel to Clearbrook-Gonvick Friday.
