4th Annual Teen Parent Summit held in Red Lake

The 4th Annual Teen Parent Summit was held in Red Lake on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at the Seven Clans Casino Event Center.

This years theme, "Building on a Dream," was designed to help focus on building a health future for teen parents and their children.

The goals of the summer were to help teen parents to successfully accomplish their educational goals and to build independent lives for themselves and their families.

According to their brochure, it stated, "While the challenges are multiplying and the resources are shrinking, we want to address these issues by bringing in the dedicated professionals who work with young parents and their children together, to share the experiences, exchange ideas and learn.

Transportation and child care for teen parents was provided, and along with certificates and a monetary incentive.

Guest speakers included Lenetta Jourdain, Darren Cook, Rob Beaulieu Brian Seki and Shanise Ostlund of New Beginnings, Dan King and Nikki Jourdain of Red Lake Nation College, Laura Malott and Susan Ninham of Red Lake High School, Anna Goldtooth of Planned Parenthood, Victoria Graves of Red Lake Community Education, Crystal Pelchat, Sue Fust, Mary Weaver of Circle of Parents, and Robyn Isham from ECFE.
