Ernest Wilson

Ernest Wilson, whose Ojibwe name is “Ma’iingan” which means “wolf”, 88, of Red Lake died Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Jourdain/Perpich Extended Care Center in Red Lake.

Traditional Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Monday, December 5, 2011 at the Ponemah Community Center with spiritual leader Steve Jackson. A wake will begin Saturday at the Ponemah Community Center and will continue until the time of the services on Monday. Interment will be at the Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Ernest was born March 10, 1923 in Red Lake, MN, the son of Elsie (Graves) and John Wilson, Sr. He was raised and educated in Red Lake. He married Philomene Whitefeather on August 14, 1946 in Redby, they later divorced. They had two children together, Rodney Wilson, Sr., and Roberta Wilson. They raised and adopted Roland (Fineday) Wilson, Sr., when he was an infant. He was a U. S. Army veteran. He loved being outside and his work him outdoors, he enjoyed logging, carpentry, being a fisherman and trapper. He received his high school diploma from Red Lake High School in 2002. He moved to the Jourdain/Perpich Extended Care Facility in 1990’s. He enjoyed playing bingo, visiting with his family and friends and was quite talented in native crafts- making moccasins and beading them and was a very skilled woodburner.

He is survived by a son: Roland (Karen) Wilson, Sr. of Redby Daughter: Roberta Wilson of Duluth 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Rodney Wilson, Sr. daughter Marilyn, 2 grandsons Rodney Wilson Jr. and Everett Lee, a granddaughter- Sonya Wilson; 2 great grandchildren, and 3 sisters Irene Dow, Lorena Raincloud and Margaret Cloud and 3 brothers-John Wilson, Jr., Anthony Wilson and Walter Graves, Sr. and his former wife Philomene.

Active Casketbearers will be James Eugene Dow, Marty Raincloud, Melvin Kingbird, Jr., Roland Wilson, Sr., Donald Dow and Vinson Wilson. Honorary Casketbearers will be the Nursing Home Residents and Staff and friends.
