Woman, 47, killed in head-on collision near Lake Bemidji State Park

A 47-year-old woman died Monday afternoon after the van she was riding in collided with another van near Lake Bemidji State Park.

Dawn Marie Boyd of Bemidji died from injuries sustained in the head-on crash, which was reported to emergency personnel at 12:54 p.m.

Both vehicles were traveling on New Bass Road Northeast, about a half mile south of Birchmont Beach Drive Northeast, also known as Beltrami County Road 20, in Turtle River Township.

Beltrami County sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene to find both drivers were pinned inside their vehicles and occupants in both vehicles sustained “extensive” injuries, according to a news release by Sheriff Phil Hodapp.

A rescue rig from Bemidji Fire, two helicopter air ambulances and three ground ambulances responded to the crash scene, where emergency crews used “Jaws of Life” equipment to extract the injured from the vehicles.

According the Sheriff’s Office:

One of the drivers, 45-year-old Anthony Dwayne Calloway of Bemidji, was driving north on New Bass Road and crossed the centerline, colliding head-on with a southbound vehicle driven by 36-year-old Heidi Lee of Bemidji.

The Sheriff’s Office said Lee swerved toward the shoulder on the road to avoid the collision with Calloway’s vehicle, which was entirely in Lee’s lane. Lee’s 2-year-old son was a passenger in the vehicle.

Lee was taken by air ambulance to Fargo’s Essentia Health and her son was taken to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

There were two passengers, including the deceased, in Calloway’s vehicle. Richard Lee Jones of Bemidji was taken to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for his injuries, while Calloway airlifted to Essentia.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies continue to investigate contributing factors to the crash. No other details were released Monday night.
