Strengthening the Circle-Breaking the Cycle
Equay Wiigamig's Strengthening the Circle--Breaking the Cycle Domestic Violence Conference was held on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at the Red Lake Casino and Events Center.
Day one of the two day conference--which concludes today--featured Jacob Flores, Counselor/Psychology with his "Roots of our Pain" presentation, a showing of the Red Lake High School Project Preserve film, "My Three Friends", a presentation titled "Why I Became Involved" by Leonard Red Cloud, Red Lake Department of Public Safety, a presentation by Todd and Shari Smith, "What is Domestic Violence; Batterer's Re-education Program, followed by testimonials and music by Michelle Mountain.
Today's agenda includes presentations by Kimberly Hare, US Assistant Attorney on the Tribal Law and Order Act; FBI Victim Specialist, Karen Seviour; Victim/Witness Consultant from the US Attorney's Office, Joyce Roy; "Prosecution of a Domestic Violence Case with Beverly May of the Red Lake Tribal Court and Prosecution Office; the Red Lake Tribal Code presented by Michelle Johnson, Red Lake Legal Department; Stephanie Cobenais of the Red Lake Department of Public Safety on General Crime; a presentation by Victoria Fineday, Equay Wiigamig Advocate, on Healing Stages; and an Advocate Panel featuring Lori Washington, Rose Barrett, Karen Neadeau, Irma Beaulieu, Linda Omen of Equay Wiigamig.
Hand Drum Singing by James Cloud--who is also the MC--and Athena Cloud are also scheduled for Wednesday's activities.
Equay Wiigamig is funded by the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs. The Equay Wiigamig Women's Shelter was developed to provide safety and shelter to families who are experiencing and overcoming Domestic Violence, Abuse, and sexual abuse.

The Equay Wiigamig has also developed various programs to reach those who need individual services that do not require shelter. The programs are as follows:
Wellstone Advocacy Program - The WAP was developed to help women and children within our community who are not residents at the Equay Wiigamig Women's Shelter.
The Whispering Wind Sexual Assault Program - The WWSAP is geared toward victims, survivors, and those who are healing from sexual assault and abuse.
Men's Re-education Program - This Program is geared toward men who are court-ordered into a re-education Program. All intakes must be completed before starting the Program.
Children's support groups - This Program is designed to provide education and activities to both group and individual talking circles.
