Community Education Red Lake School District Advisory Council Annual Meeting held on Sept. 28

The Community Education Red Lake School District Advisory Council Annual Meeting was held on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the Red Lake Casino and Events Center.

Beginning at 6 PM, youth leadership and Community Education Awards were presented, along with a Red Lake Walleye feast, and Dan King, President of the Red Lake Nation College, was the keynote speaker.

The MC for the event was Community Education Director, Vicky Graves.

Community Education is set up to be a Holistic project for all ages at the Red Lake School District, on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. Community Education has an Advisory Council made up of people from all four districts on the reservation. This Council helps make decisions about the sorts or projects that will be available to the reservation residents. The unique part of Red Lake Community Education is that projects are mostly free to participants. Their goal is to include projects that give children the opportunity to have family activities and adults to feel included in the reservation community.

Examples of projects and events include: Wellness Days for the Red Lake Communities and School Staff; Mentoring Program for high school youth, collaboration with afterschool programs, Indigenous Crafts, Holiday Crafts, 55 and over drivers education, Rez League Basketball for men over 18 years of age, Seminars for Teen Parents, sports days for children, summer youth T-Ball, softball and baseball, swimming classes and summer sports and crafts days.
