Acting Cherokee chief hopes to resolve freedmen issue so election for new chief can be held

WASHINGTON — The acting chief of the Cherokee Nation said Tuesday that the tribe was blindsided by the Obama administration's warning that its Sept. 24 tribal election would violate federal law if freedmen are not allowed to vote.
