Mary Louise Johns

Mary Louise Johns, 71, of Red Lake, died Friday, July 29, 2011, at Red Lake Hospital of cancer.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Lake, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. A wake will begin at 1 p.m. today, July 30, at the Red Lake Community Center and will continue until the time of the service. Burial will be at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Red Lake, under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Pallbearers will be Donald Brun Jr., Frank Johns, Veto Barron, Greg Stately, Brandon Morgan, Dennis Grimes, with alternates, David Skinaway Jr., Harlan Spears and Donald “Donnie Bo” Brun.

Honorary pallbearers will be Elaine “Honey” Blanchard, Joyce Schoenborn, Lorraine Chaboyea, Donna Brun, Geraldine Brun, Mary Rose Skinaway, Anna Johns, Roberta “Berta Ann” Smith.

She was born April 14, 1940, to James “Jimmy” and Mary Jane (Carl) Brun in Red Lake. She grew up and attended school in Red Lake. She later married Joseph Johns and they moved to Backus, Minn. She worked for the GrandView Lodge for five years until they moved to Bemidji. She worked at the Holiday Inn and North Country Rehab, until the Jourdain-Perpich Extended Care Center was opened in Red Lake. She worked there as supervisor of laundry and housekeeping for 12 years until she retired in 2000. In her earlier years, she worked with the BIA and Red Lake Hospital. She enjoyed traveling to various casinos and scratch-off lottery tickets.

She is survived by her husband; children, Bruce (Jen) Johns, Michael (Darlene) Johns, Carla Brun, Michelle (Arn) Johns, Simone (Zonce) Johns and Nicole Johns; step-daughter, Cherilyn Johns; brothers, George (Betty) King and Donald (Geraldine) Brun Sr.; sister, Shirley Maxwell; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bruce Brun and Gerald “Butch” Brun; sisters, Gretchen Stately, Bonnie Kingbird and Rose “LaLa” Johns; three granddaughters; two step-daughters; four step-sons; and one step-granddaughter.
