Cass County Grand Jury indicts Littlewolf with premeditated murder

A Cass County Grand Jury indicted Thursday indicted 27-year-old Ross Zangiegabo Littlewolf of Cass Lake with felony first-degree premeditated murder, second-degree intentional murder, three counts of first-degree burglary and two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

Littlewolf was indicted in relation to the June 26 shooting death of Kandace Blaine Dunn, 22, of Cass Lake, who had been killed by an apparent gunshot wound to her head.

Littlewolf appeared in Cass County District Court for arraignment on the indictment Friday, July 22. Bail conditions remain at $750,000 unconditional and $500,000 with conditions. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 31. Meanwhile, he remains in the Cass County Jail.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 3:16 a.m. Sunday, Cass County Dispatch received a report that Littlewolf had been involved in a domestic dispute at a Cass Lake residence. On arrival, law enforcement officers learned from witnesses that Dunn was lying inside the front door of the home and was believed to be dead. Dunn lived at the address with her young children ages 3 and 6 months.

Officers learned that during the previous evening a man and woman had been at the home watching movies with Dunn. Dunn went to bed in the same room as her children.

Shortly before 3 a.m. the man and woman, who were sleeping over at Dunn’s home, were awakened by a loud noise they thought was fireworks. They could hear Dunn screaming. The woman said she then heard two more shots, and Littlewolf burst into their bedroom armed with a shotgun. Littlewolf aimed the shotgun at the couple and threatened to kill them. The children were crying in the other bedroom, and Littlewolf ordered the couple into the room where they tried to comfort the children.

The couple called a family member of the man to come and pick them up. When they left the bedroom and went toward the front of the house, they saw Dunn on the floor, deceased.

Officers arrested Littlewolf at a relative’s home a short time later. Investigation revealed the Littlewolf, who had a previous relationship with Dunn, had gained entry to the house by firing a shotgun blast through a sliding glass door.

The Cass County Sheriff ‘s Office, Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, Pike Bay Police Department and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are all involved in the investigation, which is ongoing.
