Steve Wymore selected as new Red Lake Schools Superintendent

Projected to start August 1, 2011

RED LAKE – The School Board of the Red Lake Public School District has selected Steve Wymore, currently Superintendent at Lake of the Woods Community Schools, to fill the school district’s superintendent vacancy on July 11, 2011. Outgoing Superintendent Brent Gish, who is retiring, will be working closely with the Board of Education during the transition period. Wymore is expected to be offered a contract at the next regular school board meeting and should be on board on August 1, 2011.

Originally, five finalists were selected from a pool of 13 applicants based on criteria established by the School Board. The finalists were: Kevin Abrahamson, Curriculum Coordinator and Principal, St. Louis County Schools; William Higgins, Superintendent, Tuba City Unified School District; Melinda Jezierski, Curriculum Director, West Central Education District; James Murphy, former Principal, Shakopee High School; and Steve Wymore. Three of the five candidates took other positions prior to the interviews, leaving just Abrahamson and Wymore.

The School Board interviewed the two remaining finalists on Monday, July 11th and determined Wymore was the best fit for the District at this time. Had neither candidate met the criteria of the Board, the position would have been readvertised and another superintendent search conducted.

About Mr. Wymore

Steve Wymore grew up in Mayville, ND attending Mayville High School and Mayville State College. He graduated from Mayville State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Composite Music Major. Mr. Wymore worked his way through college as a staff announcer for KMAV 1520 Radio in Mayville.

Mr. Wymore's first teaching tenure was in Tolna, ND. He taught K-12 Vocal Music and 5-12 Instrumental Music. Mr. Wymore served as an Assistant Football Coach, Assistant Director for two school musicals ("You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" and "Lil Abner"), co-wrote and performed in two community musicals, and was a Charter Member of the Tolna Lions Club.

After teaching two years in Tolna, Mr. Wymore moved to Argyle, MN where he met and married his wife Carolyn. Mr. Wymore served the Argyle Public School as a 7-12 Vocal Music Instructor and 5-12 Instrumental Instructor. He also worked for the Summer Migrant Program in Argyle as well as Keller & Associates Professional Painting. During Steve's seven year tenure in Argyle, the Wymore's son, Seth, was born.

Steve then pursued a career in insurance and mutual fund sales with Lutheran Brotherhood. This career change led to a move to Crookston, MN where the Wymore's lived for two years. While serving in Crookston, the Wymore's daughter Katy was born. Mr. Wymore also served on the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, Trinity Lutheran Church Choir Director, Crookston Chapter of the JayCees and was the Brownsfield Award Winner for the Outstanding First Year Jaycee moving through regional competition and going on to the Minnesota State Jaycee competition for the Brownsfield Award. Mr. Wymore was also a member of the Crookston Lions Club.

Mr. Wymore led the process which implemented budget reductions of $200,000 for the 2005-06 School Year. During his tenure at Willow River Public Schools, a major responsibility for Mr. Wymore was to develop and implement a Statutory Operating Debt (SOD) plan. As a cost saving measure the staff at Willow River Schools implemented Site Based Management Strategies to offset the replacement of a K-12 Principal. It was anticipated that the Willow River School District would be out of SOD and have a positive fund balance by June 30, 2009. As of June 30, 2006 the Willow River Schools undesignated unreserved fund balance was a positive $188,504. This represents a positive $523,670 turn-around from the negative $335,166 undesignated unreserved fund balance recorded June 30, 2005.

The Willow River Public Schools has eliminated the SOD condition of the district. The Willow River School District undesignated unreserved fund balance as of June 30, 2007 was a positive $743,503.
