Red Lake Forest Development Center Open House

Held on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 from 10 AM - 3 PM

On Wednesday, July 13, 2011, the Red Lake Forestry Development Center held an Open House at their new facility in the Back of Town area of Red Lake. A traditional ceremony was held, followed by tours of the Center, and a feast. Over 300 people visited the facility throughout the day.

According to the DNR website, the Red Lake Forestry Development Program is responsible for all management activities necessary to establish, promote, enhance and maintain forest productivity and health. This includes such activities as tree planting and associated site preparation, thinning, pruning young trees, and establishing and maintaining seed orchards.

To support the reforestation efforts, the tribe operates a greenhouse which raises containerized seedlings of red pine, white pine, and jack pine with lesser amounts of white spruce, tamarack and northern white cedar. A new greenhouse complex is currently under construction which will have the capacity of raising 1,000,000 seedlings each year.
