Potentially dangerous heat expected this weekend into next week

A heat wave will continue to build this weekend, lasting well into next week. High temperatures will start to rise to near 90 on Saturday, and remain in the 90's next week. Overnight temperatures will yield little relief, only falling to the 70's. Scorching sunshine and high humidity is also expected for several days, which combined with the high

temperatures will create heat indices well over 100 degrees.

The heat index is much like the wind-chill factor. It factors the air temperature and humidity to how your body perceives the heat.

Remember to not leave children or pets in vehicles for any amount of time. It only takes a few minutes for a vehicle to heat to lethal temperatures. Check on neighbors who are elderly or those that have limited mobility. Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid vigorous activities outdoors. Save outdoor activities for the early morning hours when temperatures are not as extreme. Familiarize yourself to signs of heat related ailments including heat stroke, exhaustion, and dehydration. If you encounter a heat stroke victim, contact 911 immediately.
