Wichita police searching for teen missing from Planeview

WICHITA - A 14-year-old girl who is missing from Planeview is not a runaway, Wichita police say.

Katelyn Barrett, who arrived in Wichita on Sunday from Minnesota, was reported missing early this morning from the 3600 block of East Dunham, police said. She couldn't sleep, so she went outside to get some air.

There's no indication this is a runaway situation, Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte said today. "She wanted to be here" in Wichita, he said. She had asked to live with her mother in Wichita, Nolte said.

Police are using K-9 units to search the area, he said. The search includes officers on horseback and in a helicopter. Police are checking videos from businesses in the area, along Hillside and 31st Street South, he said. The Kansas Turnpike Authority has been contacted because of the Turnpike's proximity to the neighborhood, Nolte said.

While outside, she was texting her younger brother at about 1 a.m. today, police say. When she did not respond to his texts, he woke up their mother, Nolte said. She tried to call her daughter, but the call went straight to voice mail. That's when she called 911, he said. It's not like Katelyn to be out of touch, the mother said.

She was wearing green flip flops, brown shorts and a yellow shirt with the words "El Dorado" on it. She is Native American and has brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair. She is 5-feet-7 and about 120 pounds.

Anyone with knowledge of her whereabouts should call 911.
