SMSC Farmer’s Market Open to the Public

Prior Lake, MN – Each Thursday the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community will hold a Farmer’s Market at Mazopiya, the tribe’s natural food market, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Featuring fresh, organic produce exclusively from the tribe’s garden, Mdewakanton Wozupi, the Farmer’s Market is open to the public.

A wide array of vegetables like spinach, mizuna, radishes, broccoli, Asian greens, turnips, beets, zucchini, kohlrabi, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, melons, and more are expected to be available throughout the summer and fall. Produce varies each week according to the season. A limited supply of native prairie plants may also be available for sale at the Farmer’s Market, along with wares from Community member artisans.

Mdewakanton Wozupi was initially planted in the spring of 2010 as a project of the SMSC Health and Wellness Department and the Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is planted and maintained by staff, Community members, and volunteers. The garden site is located on County Road 42 near its intersection with County Road 83. Mazopiya is located next to South Metro Federal Credit Union, behind Shakopee Dakota Convenience Store #1, across from Mystic Lake Casino Hotel. Wozupi means “garden” in the Dakota language.
