Cass Lake drive-by shooting results in five arrested

Four Cass Lake residents and one from Bemidji were charged in Cass County District Court Tuesday, June 28, with aiding and abetting felony drive-by shooting of an occupied dwelling.

The five are Darryl Jackson Johnson, 26, Shane Alan Dunn, 22, Dustin Anthony Fairbanks, 22, and Jestina Elise Morin, 22, all of Cass Lake, and Jonathon Tyler Cloud of Bemidji.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 8:26 a.m. Sunday, June 26, law enforcement officers responded to a report of shots fired into a rural Cass lake home. A resident of the house reported that he was in his home when a green minivan with several occupants drove past his house, then turned around and came back. As he was watching the van through a window by the door, he saw the sliding side door open. An individual aimed a gun at the house and started shooting. The resident lay down on the floor until the shooting stopped. Investigators found that 16 rounds had struck the house. Two rounds were recovered from inside the house. Officers also recovered multiple .22 caliber shell casings in the road outside the home.

Cass County dispatch contacted a Pike Bay Police officer who followed tire tracks on the gravel road that passes the house. Leech Lake Tribal Police officers also responded and saw a green minivan that turned east on Cass County Road 9. The Leech Lake officer passed the van and recognized the driver, Darryl Jackson Johnson, a woman in the front passenger seat and several other occupants, consistent with the description given by the resident of the bullet-riddled house.

Another officer recognized the green van as the vehicle at the home of Kandace Dunn, who was killed by a gunshot wound to her head about 3 a.m. Sunday. He also recognized Johnson and Shane Dunn as having been present during the Kandace Dunn shooting. Ross Zangigabo Littlewolf has been charged with serious felony second-degree murder in that case.

Cass County Attorney said the occupant of the house the five are accused of shooting is Littlewolf’s father, and at least one of the occupants of the van is a relative of Kandace Dunn.

One Tuesday, Cass County District Court Judge David Harrington set unconditional bail at $150,000 or $100,000 with conditions for Johnson. The judge set bail with conditions at $25,000 or $15,000 cash for Morin, Fairbanks and Shane Dunn. The judge set bail for Cloud at $15,000 without conditions and $10,000 with conditions. Morin’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 5. The next court appearance for the other four suspects is scheduled for July 11. Meanwhile they remain in the Cass County Jail in Walker.
