Elizabeth Blue

Elizabeth Ann (“Betty”) (Twining) Blue, 91, of Duluth, formerly of Bemidji, died Friday, June 3, 2011, in the Hospice Unit at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, Minn.

Services were held at Benedictine Health Center Chapel on Monday, June 6.

She was born January 23, 1920, in Chicago, Ill. She graduated from Milwaukee-Downer College in 1941, and went on become a journalist with the Milwaukee Sentinel, Chico Enterprise, Palm Beach Daily News, Duhamel radio and television stations in Rapid City, and the Mobridge Tribune, a career that lasted over fifty years. Highlights were her interviews with Kathryn Hepburn, Eleanor Roosevelt (both of whom she considered role models) and Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

She gave to the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe by being an editor for “Ourselves,” the tribal newspaper; she concurrently published “De-Bah-Ji-Mon” for the Leech Lake Band for many years. She was a Girl Scout leader for ten years, and she campaigned for the DFL party. She enjoyed reading, cooking and traveling. She had been in residence at the Benedictine Health Center for over four years before her death.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Blue, Linda (Doak Cobenais) Blue, Jennifer (Ron) Perez, Russell (Vicki) Blue, Cindy (Richard) Turner, and Helen (Frank) Redner; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
