Blackduck will take on Fosston at noon today and Cass Lake-Bena will battle Nevis at 2:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the East 8A Sub-section baseball tournament at Bemidji State University.
The winners of those two games will return to the diamond at 5 p.m. today for the East title game. Both teams, however, will qualify for the 8A final four which will begin June 7 at NCTC.
Blackduck, the top seed in the East, advanced to today’s game by blitzing No. 8 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 14-0 Tuesday. Fourth-seeded Fosston eliminated No. 5 Bagley 9-3 on Wednesday in the other upper-bracket contest.
In the lower bracket No. 3 Nevis blitzed Lake of the Woods 13-3 on Tuesday. Second-seeded Cass Lake-Bena eliminated No. 7 Kelliher-Northome 11-1 on Wednesday.
Chad Wittner was the winning pitcher for the Panthers as he tossed his second consecutive 1-hitter.
CL-B, 17-3, opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Wesley Moe’s RBI double was the big hit.
The Panthers added five in the second with the key blows being Wittner’s RBI single and Caleb Fisher’s 2-run triple.
Brian Vail’s single, Jordan Collins’ double and singles by Daven Staples and Fisher combined for three runs in the third and Fisher’s third hit of the game, an RBI single, plated the final run in the fifth.
