Johnson, Wind, Beaulieu advance to state meet in High School Golf

Randahl Johnson and Cody Wind will represent the Cass Lake-Bena boys golf team at the Class A state tournament June 14-16 at Pebble Creek.

Corey Beaulieu of Red Lake also will be playing at the state competition as he carded a 91.

Johnson earned his state trip Tuesday by shooting an 89 at the par-72 Bemidji Town & Country Club in the Section 8A tournament.

Johnson finished third in the medalist chase and Wind tied for fourth with a 90.

Stephen-Argyle won the 8A team title with a 365. CL-B was second with 374, Red Lake third with 378 and Red Lake County fourth with 406.

Grant Woinarowicz of Stephen-Argyle was the meet medalist as the senior shot 83.

The top team and the top five individuals not on that team earned state berths. Joining Langaas, Johnson and Wind in the latter category were Taylor Carlson of Fosston who shot 90 and Beaulieu.

Beaulieu and Kyle Engelstad of Fertile-Beltrami each shot 91 and battled in a playoff for the final state berth. Beaulieu won it on the third extra hole.

Fosston won the girls tournament. Amy Mireault of Fosston was medalist with an 82.

Autumn Brunelle of the Cass Lake-Bena softball team was named the Upper Mississippi Conference’s Most Valuable Pitcher. She also was recently honored as an Academic All-State selection.

The senior was one of three Panthers who made the all-conference team. Joining her were junior first baseman Joy Smith and junior catcher Stephanie Masten.

Senior third baseman Emma Rousu and sophomore second baseman Kit Rousu were selected to the honorable mention squad.

Katie Wangberg of Pine River-Backus was named the conference’s most valuable position player.

Pine River-Backus won the league title with a 10-0 record. CL-B and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley shared second with 7-3 marks while Nevis was 4-6 and Laporte and Red Lake 1-9.
