Cass Lake-Bena baseball team extends winning streak

Defending sub-section baseball champion Cass Lake-Bena showed that it will be a factor again this year as the Panthers were 4-0 last week and improved to 12-3.

Among the wins was Wednesday’s 10-9, 8-inning victory over Blackduck which was ranked No. 1 in the state Class A ranks at the time.

CL-B also posted victories over Remer (5-4), Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (14-2) and Pine River-Backus (9-1).

In the latter victory Caleb Fisher belted three hits and earned his second pitching victory. Jake Ellis and Ben Ruzek each had two hits and Chad Wittner scored three runs . The Panthers who take an 8-game winning streak into today’s game at Laporte.

Ruzek belted a double to the left-center gap with one out in the eighth inning to power CL-B past Blackduck. The double was one of three hits on the night by Ruzek. Taylor Humphrey also ripped three hits.

Wittner pitched 3.2 innings of relief to earn the victory.

Blackduck forced extra innings by scoring three runs in the fifth. The Drakes also scored five in the second only to see Cass Lake-Bena respond with six in its half of the frame.

Trey Volk, Cody Bergquist, Dominic Anderson, Michael Dexter and Jacob Krabbenhoft all had two hits.

In the victory over WHA Cass Lake-Bena forged a 6-2 lead after four innings and cruised from there. Wittner had three singles, including his 100th career hit Wittner is only the second Panther to reach that milestone, joining Mike Hanson who accomplished the feat last spring.

Fisher had a pair of hits, including the game-winning 2-run single in the bottom of the seventh, to lift CL-B over Remer. He also was the winning pitcher, going the distance while allowing four hits.

Cass Lake-Bena visits Laporte today and closes its regular season Friday against Kelliher-Northome.

Blackduck (15-2) responded from its loss to CL-B by blanking Red Lake 19-0. Earlier last week the Drakes blistered Lake of the Woods 13-1.

Blackduck visited Bagley Monday and will battle Fosston 7 p.m. today at BSU.

Bagley improved to 10-5 with wins over Kelliher-Northome (17-2), Laporte (10-0) and Win-E-Mac (12-1). The Flyers hosted Blackduck Monday, entertain Northern Freeze today and end the year May 26 at Park Rapids.

Laporte took a 2-10 record to Pine River Monday. Last week the Wildcats lost 14-4 to Mahnomen.

In area softball action Cass Lake-Bena downed Nevis 9-8 but dropped a pair of 6-3 decisions to Indus. The Panthers end the regular season at home Wednesday against Red Lake which is 0-6 after losing 20-0 to Pine River.

Blackduck defeated K-N 19-9 after losing 11-5 to Littlefork, 25-9 to Bagley, 16-5 to LOW and 22-19 to Remer.

Bagley posted a 2-1 record last week to improve to 10-4. The Flyers lost 9-4 to Park Rapids, tipped Ada-Borup 5-4 and belted Mahnomen 17-1.

Kelliher-Northome dipped to 2-10 with four losses. The Mustangs fell 26-0 to LOW, 13-2 to Indus, 19-9 to Blackduck and 17-7 to WHA.
