Nibi and Manoomin: Bridging Worldviews

August 22-24 - Shooting Star Casino

Date: August 22-24, 2011 Location: Shooting Star Casino, Mahnomen, MN

This symposium is intended to build on the work initiated in August 2009. In partnership with White Earth and other tribes, a symposium was held to begin creating a space to learn from one another (University of Minnesota researchers with an interest in wild rice and tribal elders sharing their knowledge and stories about manoomin) in a good way. That initial gathering was very powerful and long overdue. One outcome of the symposium was to hold regular gatherings to share stories, research, learning and build trust so that wild rice is appreciated as a sacred gift from the creator by us all.

This second symposium entitled, “Nibi and Manoomin: Bridging Worldviews,” provides another occasion for exchanging teachings between Western and Anishinaabe cultural frames. In addition to manoomin we will include sessions on water (nibi) at this symposium. Water and manoomin belong together.

More information about the August 22-24, 2011 symposium and online registration will be posted soon.
