New Youth Tackle Football League Coming to Bemidji

Bemidji, MN, May 16, 2011 — Bemidji area youth will have an opportunity to play tackle football beginning this fall. The group Bemidji Youth Football (BYF) has announced plans for a new tackle football league for third-through-fifth graders that will begin play in August 2011.

“The primary purpose of the program is to teach the fundamentals of football, sportsmanship, discipline and the importance of team play to all of the participants,” said BYF President Wes Hegna, who along with six other

volunteer board members spearheaded the effort to bring youth tackle football to Bemidji.

Practices and games will be held at the old Bemidji High School site located on the corner of 15th Street and Bemidji Avenue. Equipment will be provided for the athletes. There will be a fee of less than $100 to play but no one will be turned away.

“We want everyone who wants to play to be able to play and thanks to generous community support we will be able to do that,” said Hegna.

BYF Board Members include Bemidji State University Head Football Coach Jeff Tesch and Bemidji High Football Coach Troy Hendricks.

“This is an exciting time for young football players in the area,” said Hendricks. “This league will provide opportunities similar to what’s available in other communities around the state.”

The league will utilize volunteer coaches. If interested contact Wes Hegna at 218-556-HIKE.
