The Chickasaw first encountered the conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1540. Uneasy contact took place between the Chickasaw and Spanish. Chickasaw leaders decided the Spanish must leave the Chickasaw Homeland. The experience was adapted into the "First Encounter" documentary film.
