  • Adam Thielen didn't come out of nowhere. Just ask the folks in Detroit Lakes

    Dec 30, 2016

Vikings receiver Adam Thielen once struggled to turn heads in Minnesota. Now the nation can’t ignore him. Patrons at the Fort Myers, Fla., bar, where Flint Motschenbacher took a break from the vacation sun to watch his former high school star, were in awe when No. 19 continually made catch after catch at Lambeau Field last weekend. Thielen enjoyed a career day with 12 catches for 202 yards and two touchdowns to put an exclamation point on a breakout campaign in his fourth NFL season. http://www.startribune.com/adam-thielen-d...

  • School's plea for improvements roils St. Paul neighborhood

    Dec 30, 2016

A new year was approaching and the children were singing, voices of harmony in a St. Paul school that has become a source of tension within the neighborhood. At Linwood Monroe Arts Plus Lower Campus, teachers use music, drama, dance and the visual arts to educate kids. On a recent Wednesday, four students — each a recent immigrant — learned English by singing about “Mr. Snowman” and the eyes, carrot and blue scarf they colored in for him. They sat at a table in the hallway, however, rather than a classroom — “A challenging spot in which to te...

  • Polaris Industries issues yet another recall, this time on Indian Motorcycles

    Dec 30, 2016

Polaris Industries’ recall saga continued this month with the recall of 23,746 Indian Motorcycles because of possible fuel-leak problems that could lead to a fire. It wraps up a year of continued recalls in the off-road market that have dogged the Medina-based company’s bottom line — with the latest coming as the company makes inroads in the highly competitive motorcycle market. “This is a quality improvement [action] and not stemming from any accidents,” said Steve Menneto, president of the motorcycle division. • New law will shift Minnesota's presidential caucuses to primaries

    Dec 30, 2016

When the next presidential election rolls around, Minnesotans will no longer be packing into classrooms and community centers to caucus for their preferred candidate. Instead, the state will shift to a more straightforward presidential primary system — a change both DFL and Republican lawmakers say should help make the process more accessible for all voters. Though it won’t get a test until the 2020 election, the new law is one of a handful of policies passed by the Legislature in 2016 that are set take effect on Jan. 1. htt...

These images show some of the defining moments of the past seven months—some that made it to mainstream media coverage and others unseen until now. Among the e...

  • Big decision in Indian Child Welfare Act case in South Dakota

    Dec 30, 2016

RAPID CITY –– The Indian Child Welfare Acts was passed by the United States Congress in 1978. The Act is a federal law: “That seeks to keep American Indian children with American Indian/Alaska Native families. Congress passed ICWA in 1978 in response to the alarmingly high number of Indian children being removed from their homes by both public and private agencies. • US Indigenous Tribe Braces for New Anti-Pipeline Struggle

    Dec 30, 2016

The Ramapough Lunaape tribe in New Jersey is preparing for battle and invoking the spirit of the successful struggles at North Dakota as they oppose another potentially dangerous oil pipeline in their backyard. The 178-mile Pilgrim pipeline would pump up to 200,00 barrels of Bakken crude oil – highly flammable and toxic to the environment – daily as it travels through Albany, New York to the Bayway Refinery in Linden, New Jersey. This means crossing through environmentally-sensitive areas and aquifers in over 30 New Jersey municipalities. htt...

  • Big Battles Over Farm And Food Policies May Be Brewing As Trump Era Begins

    Dec 30, 2016

And the president-elect hasn't yet nominated someone to head the Department of Agriculture or the Food and Drug Administration. But Donald Trump's lack of attention won't make future food battles any less cutthroat. Plenty of people in Washington, including powerful factions within the Republican majority in Congress, are hoping to change a wide variety of food-related policies, and believe that the new...
