    Dec 24, 2015

A St. Cloud Hospital security guard won’t be charged in the tasing of a sheriff’s deputy’s killer who died after the Oct. 18 altercation. The Stearns County attorney’s office announced Wednesday that the actions of security officer Ricky Ray Hess Jr. were justified under the circumstances, in which a patient had snatched a deputy’s gun and fatally shot him. Hess used his Taser to incapacitate the patient, 50-year-old Danny Leroy Hammond, which probably sent him into cardiac arrest, the report said. Despite immediate medical attention...

  • My self-employed life: Why Minnesotans like me choose freelancing

    Dec 24, 2015

Twenty minutes of hide-and-seek under the covers of my bed, with my 8-month-old son and my nearly 3-year-old daughter laughing maniacally. In the last two months, I’ve baked two cakes, a dozen muffins and one batch of brownies. I’ve even rolled out at least 80 Play-Doh “pie crusts” with my industrious daughter, Ruby, who loves to follow “wessipes” and say “check!” after we place each “ingweedient” on the kitchen table, real or not. For months, Ruby has been impatiently awaiting the season's first Minnesota snowfall. When it finally fell — on a...

As WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley reports, they’re asking the city school board to change the name of Columbus Day. The Plattsburgh city school board has twice tabled a request by Stafford Middle School students to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day on student calendars and district paperwork next year. The first postponement in November was to allow time for community feedb...

  • Disenrollment Threatens Native American Identity

    Dec 24, 2015

Three years ago, the process of disenrollment began for more than 306 members of the Nooksack Native American tribe in the northwest part of Washington State. Since that time, tribal members have been fighting the process—they're desperate to avoid what they refer to as tribal identity theft. It's a question of belong that Gabriel Galanda is fighting for. He's a tribal lawyer in Seattle and council for the 306. He's also a member of the Round Valley Indian Tribe. http://www.thetakeaway.org/story/disenrollment-threatens-nativ...

  • Fake Courts for Real Learning with Morongo Tribe

    Dec 24, 2015

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians remains a strong advocate for education, according to tribal chairman Robert Martin. That devotion could be seen in the moot court competition held at the Morongo Tribal Administrative Center on December 5. American Indian students from Southern and Central California participated in UCLA Law School’s competition, during which they learned about the legal system and earned college credits. Morongo is thought to be the first Indian reservation to host a moot court competition like this that involves dozens o...

  • Power fight could cost White Earth chairwoman her job

    John Enger, MPR|Dec 24, 2015

A power struggle over constitutional reform on the White Earth Reservation could cost longtime tribal Chairwoman Erma Vizenor her job. The Minnesota Chippewa Tribe removed Vizenor from its governing board Tuesday. The MCT governs six Minnesota bands, including White Earth, and is led by a board made up of tribal chairs and secretary-treasurers from each band. Vizenor sat on that board for the past 18 years, but lost her seat Tuesday when the MCT voted to censure her. White Earth Secretary-Treasu...

A federal court program to divert drug addicts away from prison and into treatment is still not reaching the people it was supposed to help: aboriginals, women and youth. A new evaluation says the program is largely helping white males over the age of 30, the same skewed population a previous assessment warned about six years ago. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/drug-court-treatment-diversion-program-1.3376569...
