St. Paul, MN: The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) today announced new restrictions on the use of the herbicide dicamba in Minnesota for the 2018 growing season. Dicamba is primarily used for controlling post-emergence broadleaf weeds. The new restrictions are in addition to those announced by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in October. The affected formulations are XtendiMax by Monsanto, Engenia by BASF, and FeXapan by DuPont. The decision follows the MDA’s ongoing investigation and an informal survey last summer into r...

BENSON, Minn. — Lack of proper communication by a staff member at a Benson residential facility that provides therapeutic programs for girls — including those who have been sexually exploited — may have contributed to the criminal sexual assault of a 15-year-old program participant who ran away and was found in Iowa three days later. In an amended investigation memorandum issued last week, the Department of Human Services said an unidentified staff member at Heartland Girls Ranch was responsible for "serious" maltreatment of the victim. http:...
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Democrat Doug Jones, who started the Alabama race for U.S. Senate as a massive underdog, swept to victory Tuesday night in a repudiation of scandal-stained Roy Moore. The upset also dealt a serious blow to President Donald Trump. The narrow victory slices the GOP’s already-thin margin in the Senate to a single seat, complicating the party’s legislative push and giving Democrats a major boost heading into the 2018 campaign, when control of Congress will be at stake. http://www.twincities.com/2017/12/12/reli...
The conservative Goldwater Institute is attacking the Indian Child Welfare Act again. The group has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear an ICWA case from California. The petition in Renteria v. Superior Court of California, Tulare County claims the 1978 law is based on "race" and should be deemed unconstitutional. https://www.indianz.com/News/2017/12/12/indian-child-welfare-act-under-attack-ag.asp...

Uranium, it’s now part of Navajo DNA. With over 500 abandoned uranium mines on the Navajo Nation, people living near these mines are exposed daily to radiation exposure at a rate several times higher than normal background radiation. Last week, President Donald Trump announced he was summarily reducing the Bears Ears National Monument by 85 percent, thereby opening archaeologically rich sites to uranium mining. Over the past two months, at administrative chapter houses adjacent to Bears Ears, 98 percent of Navajos voted in support of the n...
The Navajo Nation has sued Wells Fargo, saying its citizens were targeted by workers trying to meet the bank’s aggressive sales quotas. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court in Albuquerque, alleges many of the same practices that led to last year’s $185-million settlement between Wells Fargo and regulators, including the creation of unauthorized banking accounts, credit cards and other products. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-navajo-wells-fargo-20171212-story.html...

One of the stupidest plans that the extremely stupid Trump administration is currently carrying out is a dramatic shrinking of Bears Ears National Monument in Utah. Trump recently announced that he would cut the size of Bears Ears by 85 percent and halved the size of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument after a Canadian uranium drilling company mounted a concerted lobbying campaign. This push was helmed by Ryan Zinke, once the congressional representative from Montana and now Trump’s Secretary of the Interior. It was in that c...
Award-winning journalist Suzette Brewer joins host Lindsay Beyerstein for a wide-ranging discussion of issues facing Native American communities in the era of President Donald Trump. At reservations all over the country, water is being poisoned as toxins from mines seep into the local water supplies. And now the Trump administration wants to dramatically increase drilling on public lands, putting even more tribes at risk. A Mescalero Apache tribal member is urging that a new election for the presidency be staged based on perceived flaws in the handling of a residency question that determined Arthur “Butch” Blazer’s eligibility to be on the ballot. Blazer, former council member, state forester and USDA official, won the general election in early November with 669 votes to challenger Mark Chino’s 569. The Mescalero reservation adjoins the village of Ruidoso. http://www.ruidosonews.com/story/news/local/community/2017/12/12/butch-blazer-prepares-...
A recently published study found that urban-dwelling American Indians and Alaskan Natives have much lower survival rates associated with prostate and breast cancer, even when healthcare access is equal. Previous studies have found that the urban American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) community has higher cancer incidence than other racial or ethnic groups. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/320325.php...
Only about 50 percent of Native American students graduate high school, compared to 80 percent of white students. That’s one reason why the Wyoming Department of Education teamed up with the North Central Comprehensive Center, a national education contractor, to conduct listening sessions in each of the three school districts on the Wind River Reservation. At the sessions, students and parents agreed that reservation schools need more Native American teachers, less bullying and gangs, and more culturally relevant courses, including Native l...
A salmon fishing agreement between the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and tribal co-managers is fueling continued angst by many recreational fishermen who fear it will force severe closures. The Comprehensive Management Plan for Puget Sound Chinook was recently released after a long secret court mediation process. If approved, it could place severe restrictions on salmon fishing around Puget Sound. Because the plan was reached in secret, it's also reignited a rallying cry for transparency from WDFW and tribal co-managers....
Following on the heels of the Justice Department’s decision not to prosecute a police officer for the shooting of young Navajo mother Loreal Tsingine in Arizona, an Indigenous eighth grader, Jason Pero, was killed by a white policeman in Wisconsin on November 8. Pero was a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and was killed on his own reservation. He was shot outside his grandparents’ home by Ashland County Deputy Brock Mrdjenovich, who alleged the boy lunged at him with a butcher knife. The family and others are ske...
Olivia Lone Bear was always at home on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in New Town, North Dakota, her brother Matthew Lone Bear told Dateline. Olivia had five kids under the age of 14, after all, and they were her primary responsibility. “She was in-between jobs, so that’s all she did – take care of them,” Matthew told Dateline. “She stayed at the house and cooked dinner at night and got the kids to school in the morning.” https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/missing-in-america/family-frustrated-lack-search-efforts-native-am...

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Democrat Doug Jones shocked this state, and the country, by defeating Republican Roy Moore in Alabama’s Senate special election Tuesday, a victory that sounds a loud warning to the White House and the Republican Party. President Trump had thrown his full support behind Moore, who was a controversial figure even before multiple allegations emerged that he had pursued inappropriate relationships with teenagers as an adult. https://www.yahoo.com/news/democrat-doug-jones-beats-roy-moore-claim-deep-red-alabama-...
